It shouldn't. But it does.
When does a complaint become an annoyance? And when is an irritation simply unnecessary?
There are definitely things that should not happen. Like today, when I had lunch and the heads of the lettuce came with a seasoned dressing of mud. I like to know that my food is "farm fresh" but there is a limit on how earthy I truly want it to be.
I've been a waitress for over 13 years - this is why service matters to me. But I've made my fair share of mistakes. The classic that sticks in my mind happened back in 2006/2007. I worked for this local Italian restaurant run by a classic Italian chef and his wife ran the front of house. She was very particular about the fact that we remember the locals. Their names, their drinks, what they did last week and what dishes they favored. But this time I maybe was too enthusiast about serving this family. As I went to open the bottle of red wine, the cork exploded taking most the contents of the wine bottle with it, with the wine landing over the lordly looking father of the family. Fortunately he had a brilliant sense of British humor but that most certainly shouldn't have happened but it did.
Which brings me back to my point. When is it right to complain? Hotels & restaurants are here for our comfort, our service but they're all run by humans (for now). I've tempered down my complaining but it doesn't mean I don't make a mental note and quietly score everything around me...
